Scientific Conference "Scientific journals: the challenges posed by the evaluation of the social sciences"

On Friday, 15th of October 2021, AMU Faculty of Law and Administration hosted a scientific conference "Scientific journals in the face of the evaluation of social sciences". The conference - organized 100 years after "Ruch Prawniczy, Ekonomiczny i Socjologiczny" [Journal of Law, Economics and Sociology] was created - served to commemorate this anniversary and to celebrate fruitful cooperation between the AMU Faculty of Law and Administration, the AMU Faculty of Sociology and the University of Economics in Poznań in publishing this journal. However, the conference was also an opportunity to reflect on contemporary challenges related to the evaluation of scientific journals.

In the speech inaugurating the conference, the Vice-Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, prof. dr hab. Zbyszko Melosik emphasized that the need to evaluate science should not quench a passion for research, which distinguishes academic teachers form other professions. The Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration of AMU, prof. dr hab. Tomasz Nieborak pointed out that the existence of RPEiS is a testimony of many years of cooperation between representatives of three social sciences: law, economy and sociology. Editor-in-chief of RPEiS prof. dr hab. Marek Smolak, welcoming the gathered guests, pointed out that the conference was not only commemorative, but also served to discuss current problems encountered by scientific journals.
 
The first panel was opened by prof. dr hab. Jerzy Marian Brzeziński (AMU), who presented the paper "Scientific journals viewed from different perspectives". Then prof. dr hab. Marian Gorynia (UEP) and prof. dr hab. Bronisław Sitek (SWPS) took the floor; their presentation was entitled: "The role of scientific journals in the reformed system of science and higher education in Poland". The third speaker was prof. dr hab. Marek Ratajczak (PUEB), who delivered the paper "Scientific journals, the system of academic promotions and mechanisms of the development of science in Poland". The panel ended with the speech of prof. AMU dr. hab. Emanuela Kulczycki entitled "From prestigious to predatory journals - the spectrum of publishing standards".
 
At the beginning of the second panel, the papaer by prof. dr. hab. Andrzej Wróbel (Kozminski University) “Minister in the garden of science. About power and politics in the evaluation of scientific legal journals ” was read. Then prof. dr hab. Marek Zirk-Sadowski (University of Lodz) delivered a lecture on "Legal journals and legal practice". Next, a speech "Should legal journal rankings be law?" was presented by prof. dr hab. Wojciech Dajczak (AMU). The last speaker was prof. UG Dr. hab. Grzegorz Wierczyński who presented a paper "Polish lists of scientific journals - a summary of the experience to date from the perspective of legal journals".
The conference was held in the building of the Collegium Iuridicum Novum (Faculty of Law and Administration, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) but was also broadcasted via MS Teams.

The digitalisation and archiving of volumes 1–19 (1921–1939) and 20–59 (1958–1997) was undertaken under contract number 541/P-DUN/2016 financed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education – Objective: Ruch Prawniczy, Ekonomiczny i Socjologiczny—digitalisation and deposition of each year in the AMUR archive with the aim of publishing them and maintaining open access to them on the Internet.

The English translation of articles in 2016 and 2017 was undertaken under contract number 541/P-DUN/2016 financed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education – Objective: Ruch Prawniczy, Ekonomiczny i Socjologiczny—translation and editing of articles for publication in English for open access on the Internet (OJS/ CC licence).
